Magic-Users are characters who specialize in the casting of magical spells. Playing a Magic-User gives you access to more magical power than any other class.

Magic-User Features

As a magic-user, you gain the following class features.

Spellcasting

Through years of study, you have learned to record magical formulae within your spell books and commit them to memory. Each spell is an intricate pattern that can be held within the mind only temporarily. When cast, the pattern collapses and is forgotten until it is prepared again.

A Magic-User’s spells are considered magical spells.

Your spell book contains the magical formulae you have researched and mastered.

You must have access to one of your spell books whenever you prepare spells, but never when casting them. Because every magic-user develops their own notation and theories, you cannot prepare spells directly from another magic-user’s spell book.

Many magic-users maintain several spell books, carrying only those needed for a particular journey. If you have no spell book available, the only spell you may prepare is Read Magic.

Spell books are among a magic-user’s most valuable possessions. Outside of trusted master-apprentice relationships, few are willing to allow another to study their work without substantial payment.

You may discover spell books, scrolls, or other magical writings during your adventures. These cannot be prepared directly. Instead, you must first decipher them using Read Magic, then spend the required time and expense copying the spell into one of your own spell books.

Immediately after completing a Safe Rest, you may spend one uninterrupted hour studying your spell book. During this time, you prepare your spells by committing individual spells to memory. Each prepared spell occupies one spell slot of its level.

For example, a 3rd-level Magic-User prepares three 1st-level spells and two 2nd-level spells. Preparing the same spell multiple times allows you to cast it multiple times before resting again. Prepared spells remain in memory until cast.

Spell Preparation can only be done immediately following a Safe Rest.

Some Magic-User spells have a reverse form. When you prepare a reversible spell, you prepare the spell itself; you do not choose a form during spell preparation.

Each time you cast that prepared spell, choose whether to use the spell or its reverse. Resolve the chosen form’s effects, then erase the prepared spell from your memory as normal. If you prepare the same reversible spell multiple times, you make this choice separately each time you cast it.

To cast a prepared spell, you must:

Have the spell prepared.
One hand must be free to gesture.
Be able to speak clearly.
Not be wearing armor or wielding a shield.

Some spells also require material components. If so, the required component must be held in your free hand when the spell is cast.

After resolving the spell’s effects, the magical formula is erased from your memory. The spell slot becomes empty and cannot be used again until you prepare spells after another Safe Rest.

Cantrips are simple magical formulae that occupy little space within your mind.

By spending one uninterrupted hour studying your spell books, you may prepare a number of cantrips from among those recorded within them. The Spell Progression table shows how many cantrips you may prepare, as well as the number of cantrip casts available in your shared pool.

Each time you cast a prepared cantrip, you expend one available cantrip cast from your shared pool, regardless of which prepared cantrip you cast. Unlike leveled spells, cantrips are not erased from your memory when cast and remain prepared until you replace them.

You regain all expended cantrip casts whenever you complete a night’s rest.

Establishment

Upon reaching 10th level, your accomplishments have earned you the influence and resources needed to establish a lasting presence in the world.

You may construct, claim, or restore an establishment. The establishments available to you are determined by the keywords you possess. Each keyword grants access to one or more establishments, allowing you to found organizations, strongholds, places of learning or worship, centers of commerce, and other holdings appropriate to your expertise.

If you possess multiple keywords, you may select an establishment from any one of them, provided you meet its prerequisites. Additional establishments may also be available through your ancestry or campaign guides.

An establishment serves as more than a place to reside. It becomes the center of your growing influence, allowing you to attract followers, train retainers, conduct research, manage lands or organizations, craft items, and undertake other long-term endeavors. The benefits and requirements of each establishment are described with the establishment itself.

If you are a multi-class character, you gain this feature only once, when one of your classes first reaches 10th level. When determining whether you meet a feature's prerequisites, consider all keywords you possess, regardless of the level of the class that granted them.
